Frequently asked questions

Q: What is Skype?

A: Skype is an often used voice and video communication service and is one of the pioneers in voice communication over the Internet. You can make unlimited free video chats to anyone in the world provided that the person is using Skype too. All both parties need is an internet connection.

Q: How can you use Skype?

A: Just download the free software from Skype. https://www.skype.com/en/ and create a free Skype account and you will be ready to go. Before getting started we have to accept an invitation request from each other. To do so, I will communicate my skype address beforehand.

If your computer does not already have a built-in microphone you may need to purchase a microphone. For a better sound quality a headset is recommended too.

Q: How can you find out your present level of German?

A: If you have already had some German tuition but don’t know what level you are at, you could do an assessment test. If you need help of finding a suitable test, please contact me via the contact form.

Q: Aren’t skype classes impersonal?

A: I don’t think it’s less personal than any other private lesson. To open up as a person, most people need to feel secure, relaxed and comfortable. During a Skype lesson, you sit comfortably at your own desk, in your own home, which is usually more relaxing and convenient than in a classroom or office.

Q: How do you pay for the lessons?

A: I would recommend first that you have a free trial lesson. That gives us the chance to meet and to get to know each other. We will discuss what course and package would suit you best. The payment can be done by postfince.ch, via Einzahlungsschein or you can send your payment directly to my IBAN number.

Q: Can you cancel or postpone a lesson?

A: Sure! Booked lessons can be postponed or cancelled at no cost at least 24 hours in advance.

Lessons cancelled or rescheduled less than 24 hours in advance will be fully charged!

If there are technical problems on the teacher's side, the lesson or lost time will be made up for.

Q: What happens if you are late or don’t show up for class?

A: The lesson will be considered void if the student does not appear by 15 minutes after the scheduled start time. That specific class is consequently not reschedulable.

Some recommendations to optimize audio and video quality:

Make sure Skype is kept updated.  Find the latest version of Skype here. https://www.skype.com/en

Wear headphones/headset. If you hear echoes in the audio it can be because the other party’s speakers are too loud and generating feedback. Wear headphones and the echoes should subside instantly!

Minimize ambient noise.  Try to create a quiet, classroom-like environment while you are having a lesson.

Close other programs during the lesson.  Overloading your Internet capacity with open programs could worsen audio and video quality.
